What is the Developer Garden Component Marketplace?
The Developer Garden Marketplace is an international over-the-top marketplace offered by Deutsche Telekom where developers can discover, offer, sell or buy pre-build software components, APIs, SDKs and tools for a wide range of software development languages and frameworks.
What types of platforms are supported?
The Developer Garden Component Marketplace contains components for a wide range of platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Phone and HTML5. The offered license management system currently supports Android and iOS.
Are there any guidelines for creating components?
Yes, please see our detailed information about creating components (iOS/Android).
Furthermore we recommend that you make sure that the components are well tested so that developers who license them can integrate them into their applications as effortlessly as possible. We also suggest that you submit a sample app that demonstrates usage of your component and any API documentation that your peer developers may need. While we also perform a quality screen for all submitted components, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that components work as described/designed.
Is anything prohibited from being in a component?
You should only submit components that you, the author, own and for which you have the rights to sell, or components for which you have explicit rights to redistribute.
For example, if you have a weather component, make sure that you have the rights to the weather service and your component does not violate terms of service from any other third-party service you use within your component.
Please also bear in mind that the Developer Garden Component Marketplace must not be used for illegal purposes or illegal activity, for publishing content that is implicitly or explicitly offensive, vulgar, abusive, racist, discriminating or that is liable to disturb, annoy, cause anxiety, harass any individual, or for incorporating links to pornographic, indecent or sexually oriented content.
What do I need to do to get ready to sell in Developer Garden Component Marketplace?
Just follow the steps in our Getting Started section and our tutorials (iOS/Android).
What does it cost to sell a component in the Developer Garden Component Marketplace?
There are no listing fees or credit card fees for a component developer in the Developer Garden Component Marketplace.
What is the Verious License Manager SDK?
The Verious License Manager is an optional tool, provided by our partner Verious, which can help you to ensure that your libraries are copy-protected so that only licensed buyers may use your components.
It uses well-known standards-based public key cryptography (PKI) and effective encryption techniques which are the same as those used by banks and other financial institutions.
Would you recommend using the Verious License Manager?
The Verious License Manager is an optional tool which ensures that your libraries are copy-protected so that only licensed buyers may use your components.
You do not need to secure your component via the Developer Garden Component Marketplace if you think it is more beneficial for you not to do so. It is therefore up to you to decide whether or not to use the optional Verious License Manager.
However, we do recommend that you bear in mind security issues.
Which license models are supported in the Developer Garden Component Marketplace?
There are two kinds of component licenses supported by the offered Verious Licensing SDK
Perpetual License: The buyer of a component pays a one-off fee and is allowed unlimited use of the component in a single application.
Annual License: The buyer of a component pays an annually fee and is allowed unlimited use of the component in a given application for 1 year.
In addition to the above, buying a license means buying a license for one app ID. If you want to use the same component in another app, you have to pay again for that licences. Furthermore, a potential buyer of a component is allowed to download and try a component free of charge for 30 days before being required to pay for the component. This "try before you buy" model allows a buyer to test a component prior to shipping their completed app.
How should I price my component?
You are the best person to judge in what price range to market your component. We recommend that you take into account a number of market trends that may help you come to the right decision:
Prices for paid apps on the Android Market and AppStore Marketplace range from €1 to €30. The cost of building an iPhone app can range from €25,000 to €200,000. Your component could be a key building block that solves a specific need. An app developer may choose to buy several components to build a single app.
You should also keep in mind the licensing model. Developers are licensing your component for redistributing to all their users. Initial components in the Developer Garden Component Marketplace will be listed at €20/year to €1,000/year (based on functionality, complexity and demand).
What is available in the Component Marketplace during the beta phase?
Already in the beta phase, all core features such as registration, login, catalogue search and filtering, payment and settlement are in place.
We ask for your feedback to continuously improve the service experience and get your ideas for additional value-add features.
