Apr 1stAs the number of smartphones and smartphone applications has increased enormously people have gained years of experience on how to create efficient mobile apps. As a consequence the GSMA has published a developer guide to improve apps connectivity, power consumption, user experience, security, and device battery life.
Smarter Apps for Smart Phones – the GSMA developer guide
The GSMA has created a free-of-charge and easy-to-understand developer guide to:
- inform about mobile network characteristics and constraints
- explain techniques such as secure and efficient protocols, caching, compression, data aggregation, pipelinig etc. that are available and can be used to optimize and secure an app's network connection or significantly improve battery life
- provide detailed recommendations for iOS, Android and Windows phone as well as sample code.
Understanding and applying some key principles and techniques you can significantly improve your app’s connectivity, power consumption and security, thereby greatly improving the overall user experience.

GSMA Smarter App Challenge 2012
GSMA has also announced a competition, to incentivise developers to implement these recommendations and create more efficient mobile applications. The challenge is open to all apps! Why not enter and see how efficient your app is?
As a grand prize winner you can win a trip for 2 to the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai as well as $ 10,000 cash. The first runner-up and the second runner-up will receive $ 2,000 cash and a trip for 2 to the Mobile Asia Expo each.
