Digital home entertainment only begins to be real fun when all the machines at home harmonize with one another and – for instance – it’s no problem to show films and photos from your PC on the TV – quickly and without any error messages or other faults.But that is easier said than done. For this reason, since 2003 more than 240 companies in the consumer electronics area and the IT and telecommunications industry have joined forces under the Digital Living Network Alliance, DLNA for short.

The central task of the DLNA is to control and further develop the DLNA standard, which is intended to ensure that different types of equipment from different manufacturers are mutually compatible.

Jens explains in his lecture what exactly is behind the DLNA standard, what UPnP stands for (Universal Plug and Play) and why DLNA is still needed in spite of UPnP.
He provides insights on the technological aspects of DLNA and the certification process and attempts to explain where DLNA gained its somewhat poor reputation, and where the repeated incompatibilities come from between devices that have actually been certified.

In addition, Jens reports on the adventure of implementing a closed specification like DLNA as a FOSS project.

The techtalk is targeted at interested developers, architects and decision-makers. The talk will not over-indulge in source codes, and will be in German.

The event will take place at c-base in Berlin. c-base is located in the heart of Berlin on the banks of the river Spree and is easily accessible (see directions).

The speaker

Jens Georg works for Openismus in Berlin and is at present the lead developer of
UPnP & DLNA media servers for Nokia in the “MeeGo/Harmattan” project. Jens has many years of experience in audio and video-streaming, principally in the CCTV field. He is also one of the maintainers and developers of Rygel, a free and open software which represents both a DLNA-compliant media server and a development platform that provides other developers and projects with a wide range of interfaces to add DLNA functionality to their projects quite simply.

The event will take place at c-base. c-base is a hackerspace in Berlin, right next to the river Spree, between the Jannowitzbrücke bridge and the Ostbahnhof station.

With a little luck, you may find a parking space right in front of the building. If not, you can use the nearby parking garage next to the Turkish Embassy across the other side of Brückenstraße or leave your car next to Köllnischer Park.

The easiest way to get to c-base using public transport is to take the U8 from the U-Bahnhof station Heinrich-Heine-Str or from the S- and U-Bahnhof station Jannowitzbrücke, just one stop away from Alexanderplatz.
