TechTalk: GPU computing – between hype and future of modern processors | October 4, 2011 Berlin
We are pleased to be holding the first TechTalk event in cooperation with the Deutsche Informatik Akademie (German academy for computer science). This TechTalk will take place at c-base in Berlin.
Graphics processing units (GPUs) have enormous potential – almost everyone has one and they are now much more powerful than a main processor. At the same time, user-friendly programming models are available for GPUs in the form of DirectX Compute, CUDA and OpenCL.
In practice, different areas of application are developing for GPUs: CPU-intensive analyses of measurement data (e.g., CT scans, MRTs and material examinations via ultrasound or x-ray) can be calculated using just one workstation again. Complex simulations are only possible thanks to a faster time-to-solution
The first part of the TechTalk event offers an introduction to the topic, presenting terms and concepts, as well as current GPU hardware. In the second part, different examples and demos are used to show the strengths and weaknesses of GPUs.

This TechTalk event is aimed at developers and architects interested in hardware and software.
The event will take place at c-base in Berlin. c-base is located in the heart of Berlin on the banks of the river Spree and is easily accessible (see directions). You will find the video of the talk on our YouTube Channel afterwards.
Interested colleagues and external guests can register with a formless e-mail to techtalk@developergarden.com by September 30, 2011 at the latest. The event begins at 6 pm and ends at around 7.30 pm. Attendance is free and drinks and snacks are provided.

The speaker
Guido Juckeland is the system engineer responsible for the supercomputers belonging to the regional state of Saxony. He also shares some of his long-standing experience of designing, installing and operating HPC resources with students in his lecture entitled "Structure and organizational principles of processors". In addition, he is working on a dissertation on "Performance Analysis for Hardware Accelerators", focusing on GPU computing, an area in which he also has extensive experience with regard to porting and optimizing applications. He has been recognized for his work in the field of HPC, receiving the Bandwidth Challenge Award 2007 and the Cluster Challenge Award 2008 at the Supercomputing Conference.
The TechTalk team is looking forward to an exciting first event in Berlin and lively discussions with participants.
Info for getting there and parking
The event will take place at c-base c-base is a hackerspace in Berlin, right next to the river Spree, between the Jannowitzbrücke bridge and the Ostbahnhof station.
With a little luck, you may find a parking space right in front of the building. If not, you can use the nearby parking garage next to the Turkish Embassy across the other side of Brückenstraße or leave your car next to Köllnischer Park.
The easiest way to get to c-base using public transport is to take the U8 from the U-Bahnhof station Heinrich-Heine-Str or from the S- and U-Bahnhof station Jannowitzbrücke, just one stop away from Alexanderplatz.
Coordinates:
Rungestr. 20

When approaching from the road, walk through the main entrance and cross to the other side of the courtyard. The entrance is right at the back, looking straight onto the river Spree ;-)
ABOUT TECHTALK
With the TechTalk format, the Developer Garden – Telekom's developers' platform – offers a discussion forum for developer topics and trends in technology. The events begin with presentations and demonstrations from experts. The floor is then opened for questions and discussions. Afterwards, you can meet the speakers and other participants at the buffet, exchanging ideas and making new contacts.
TechTalks are currently taking place in Berlin and Darmstadt. And if you can't make it in person, you can follow the presentations as a live stream and participate in the online chat. We also post videos of the events on our YouTube channel afterwards.
