TechTalk | HbbTV® - Internet meets TV

In the age of broadband connections and always-on it is clear that the Internet is also arriving on our TV sets. Since this trend has been taken up by various CE manufacturers for quite some time, the result is a wild landscape of technologies. To stop this proliferation, HbbTV has been developed as a new industry standard and offers an open and neutral platform to support broadcast and broadband offerings. Version 1.0 of this specification was accepted as an ETSI standard in December 2009.

Since then, HbbTV offerings have increased steadily. Public and private stations, in particular, make use of the opportunity to link their TV program with Internet contents. A growing number of station-independent VoD or information portals also supply their data in the format of the new standard and are thus available on HbbTV-capable devices.

The presentation answers the following questions, among others:

  • What (technology) is behind the standard?
  • How to develop in HbbTV.
  • What is the current distribution status?
  • Will HbbTV be accepted?
  • How will HbbTV develop or what opportunities can be derived from it?

A brief demo will show what HbbTV feels like and where there is still potential for improvement.

The target group of the TechTalk does not only include developers but also those interested in the subject matter who want to know what tomorrow’s television will look like. The level is suitable for both beginners and advanced attendees. Basic knowledge of web technologies is a benefit. The TechTalk will be held in German.

The event will take place at Deutsche Telekom AG, Products & Innovation in Darmstadt. Interested colleagues and external guests can register by sending an informal e-mail specifying their name/company to techtalk@developergarden.com by April 19, 2011 at the latest. The event begins at 6 p.m. and ends at around 8 p.m. Attendance is free and drinks and snacks are provided as always.
