openHAB - Home Automation in Practice - August 8, 2011 Berlin

openHAB - Home Automation in Practice

The home automation market is still in its infancy and yet there exist dozens of different standards, protocols, concepts and devices. Every system has its pros and cons, but in most cases, none of them is able to fulfill all requirements an interested user might have.

The integration aspect is therefore key for a successful setup. Otherwise, one can easily end up with multiple co-existing systems, each coming with its own user interface - be it a hardware remote control or an “app” - and all being isolated from each other.

openHAB – the open Home Automation Bus – is an Open Source project that integrates different home automation systems. The aim is to offer a uniform user interface, transparent communication between devices and powerful automation abilities across system boundaries. Being based on OSGi, openHAB has a very modular architecture and is easily extensible and customizable.

This talk will give an overview of the home automation market and briefly introduce the most widely used standards. The openHAB architecture and configuration will be explained and a live demo will conclude the talk.

TechTalk’s target group includes all software developers who are interested in tools and the future of software development. The talk is held in German.

The event is held at Deutsche Telekom AG, Products & Innovation in Darmstadt. Interested colleagues and external guests can register with a formless e-mail with their name/company to techtalk@remove-this.developergarden.com by August 07, 2011 at the latest. The event begins at 6 pm and ends at around 8 pm. Attendance is free and drinks and snacks are provided as always.

This time there won't be any livestream available but we intend to publish a video on the Developer Garden YouTube channel subsequent to the talk.
